What movie totally deserves a remake?
A remake of The Outsiders could be really amazing, but the original cast was so perfect (trust me on this, I saw it seven times in the theater when it came out) that I’d be worried no one could fill their giant shoes. Still, I’d like to see someone try it.

What’s the best concert you’ve ever been to?
This question is kind of like asking me which of my children is my favorite because I’ve been to so many great shows. Maybe, possibly, it was Flogging Molly (since I’ve lost track of how many times I’ve seen them), but I know that eventually I’ll think of some other band and be like, “Oh no! Why didn’t I say THEM?!”

What is the most rewarding thing about writing for young adults?
It’s definitely when they connect with one of my stories. I’ve had a lot of teens tell me that their brothers or sisters had served in Afghanistan so SOMETHING LIKE NORMAL (my first novel) hit home for them and helped them understand what their siblings were going through. I always love it when a blogger or a librarian or a bookseller tells me they love my books, but when I hear it straight from a teen, there is absolutely nothing more gratifying.

Be honest, do you know what happened at the Alamo?
I do! PeeWee went looking for his stolen bike at the Alamo and everyone laughed at him when he thought there was a basement. No, seriously, I do know. The Alamo was the site of a battle during Texas’ struggle for independence from Mexico. Nearly all the defenders of the Alamo were killed but the battle rallied other Texans to join the revolution and eventually Texas won their independence.

About WHERE THE STARS STILL SHINE:
Stolen as a child from her large and loving family, and on the run with her mom for more than ten years, Callie has only the barest idea of what normal life might be like. She’s never had a home, never gone to school, and has gotten most of her meals from laundromat vending machines. Her dreams are haunted by memories she’d like to forget completely. But when Callie’s mom is finally arrested for kidnapping her, and Callie’s real dad whisks her back to what would have been her life, in a small town in Florida, Callie must find a way to leave the past behind. She must learn to be part of a family. And she must believe that love–even with someone who seems an improbable choice–is more than just a possibility.
