2018 Fiction Writing Contest

Please read all the guidelines below before submitting your entry.

Eligibility Requirements

  • The TTBF Fiction Writing Contest is open to Texas residents aged 11-18 years.
    (Note: You must be 11 to 18 at the time of the contest deadline.)
  • You must be a Texas resident to be eligible for this contest.
  • This is a fiction contest. Submissions must be works of fiction.
  • Entry is limited to one per person.
  • Only single author entries qualify (no co-authors).
  • Writing must be author’s original work and creation.

Submission Requirements

  • To qualify, each entry must be submitted along with a fully completed entry form (linked below).
  • The writer’s name should not appear anywhere within the document or in the document title.
  • Each entry must include the following:
    • a 300 to 500 word synopsis of your overall story
      • The synopsis should be the first page of your document and should be titled SYNOPSIS. Make sure we can tell where your synopsis ends and your story begins.
    • a 9,000 to 14,000 word excerpt from your story
  • Required Format for All Entries:Double-Spaced
    • Times New Roman font
    • 12 point font size
    • 1-inch margins
    • All pages numbered
    • In one of the following file formats: .pdf, .doc, .docx, .rtf
  • Save your electronic file using the following naming conventions:TitleofStory_YourInitials
      • Example: ThrownofGlass_SJM

All submissions must be received by 11:59 PM on Saturday, July 1, 2018.

Winners will be notified on or around September 1 and will be invited to participate in the 2018 Texas Teen Book Festival on October 6, 2018 at St. Edward’s University.

The submission window has closed for 2018.

Prizes

Three overall winners will be selected by our contest judges.

Each of our three winners will receive a prize of $150, as well as a full editorial review by an editor from Delacorte Press, an imprint of Random House Children’s Books!

Contest Judges

Winners will be selected by a panel of judges representing the Texas Teen Book Festival programming committee, as well as a selection of Austin authors, librarians, and booksellers.
