What’s your favorite shade of lipstick right this moment?
Seriously? This is like asking a mother of fifty which child she likes most. #ImpossibleToAnswer
When you were a teen, what kind of stories were you looking for? What did you gravitate toward, and what do you wish you’d had more of?
What’s interesting about this is that I honestly didn’t know what I was looking for… I just knew that what existed wasn’t really doing anything for me—but I also didn’t realize I was allowed to complain about it. That’s the problem with a universal lack of representation: it makes you question the value of your own existence.
One book that did a lot for me as a teen was The Virgin Suicides by Jeff Eugenides. There were no black people in it, but it was cool to read a book about teens going through the same stuff teen me was going through. Books like that featuring black characters would’ve been dope looking back.
