A #TTBF Q&A with Author Erika Sánchez

Which is better to write: first page or last page?

First page. I never know how a book will end. I need to be surprised.

If you could choose one X-Men power, what would it be and why?

I wish I could literally slap tacos out of the hands of racists. That would be so fun.

What’s your favorite and least favorite meal?

Favorite: Barbacoa tacos. Least favorite: Any kind of plane food.

You’ve been on the road talking about I Am Not Your Perfect Mexican Daughter for a couple of years now. What’s the most surprising (or most interesting) question a reader has ever asked you?

“How many lives do you think you’ve saved with your book?” I’m still stunned by that question.

Julia’s story has truly resonated so much with teens. What story resonated the most with you as a teen — or was there a story you wish you had back then?

I didn’t have access to many diverse books, but I remember House on Mango Street being one of the first texts I saw myself in.

If you could choose three books to include on our official “Read Everything” book list for 2019, what would they be?

American Dirt by Jeanine Cummins (forthcoming in 2020); Good Talk by Mira Jacob; Lima :: Limón by Natalie Scenters-Zapico
