Len Vlahos – Rock Star!
We think author Len Vlahos rocks. First of all, he’s joining us for Texas Teen
Book Fest 2014 as part of the “Come on Feel the Noise” panel on music-themed
books.
Then there’s his debut novel, “The Scar Boys,” an unforgettable story about the
power of punk rock for a burned and bullied teenager and his bandmates.
Len writes from experience. Back in the ’80s, he used to play in a pop-punk band
called Woofing Cookies. He sent us these clips of the Cookies in action. That’s
Len on guitar.
That second song, “In the City,”was produced by Peter Buck of R.E.M. The story
about how Len and his bandmates made that happen reads like something out of
a book.
Len also gave us this playlist of five songs that he feels capture the spirit of “The
Scar Boys”:
• “Add It Up” by Violent Femmes
• “How Many Friends” by The Who
• “Lightning Bolt” by Jake Bugg (“I was introduced to this song after the fact
by a reader,” Len says.)
• “Don’t Go Back to Rockville” by R.E.M.
• “Growin’ Up” by Bruce Springsteen

And get ready to talk music and books with Len and the rest of the “Come on
Feel the Noise” authors (Frank Portman, Gayle Forman and Kevin Emerson) at
the Texas Teen Book Festival on Oct. 18 in at St. Edward’s University in Austin.
